#*NYSC- PERSONAL HYGIENE AND ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION, THE CENTER PIECE OF NESD PROGRAM*#

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in commemoration with the World Environmental Day celebrated every 5th of June with theme 2021: 'Restore Ecosystem, raise awareness' has rolled out its programme for sustainable National Environmental Sanitation Day (NESD) with the theme; ' CLEAN ENVIRONMENT/GOOD HYGIENE: Panacea for Good Health and Long life'.

The program which took place in all the Local Goverment Areas nation wide saw the corps members in Motor Park's, Market Square's, Schools and Office Environments, sensitizing the publics on personal hygiene and the need for clean environment, cleaning up and packing of refuse dumps.

The activities in Delta State was not different from observations across other States, as the incoming NYSC Delta State Coordinator Mr. Alao Olusegun O. flagged off the program at Oshimili South Local Goverment Area Council earlier today.

In an open address by Director-General NYSC  to Corps Members, "environmental sanitation has been recognized globally as one of the key requirements for prevention of diseases and their escalation to epidemic proportion.

recently conducted on the platform of the NYSC Health Initiative
for Rural Dwellers (HIRD), most of the ailments diagnosed and
treated were as a result of poor hygiene. They include chronic diarrhoea, dental caries (tooth decay) head/body lice, ringworm, dysentery, typhoid, polio, scabies trachoma, Hepatitis A, and
malaria amongst others. Therefore, efforts must be made to save many more lives by empowering the people with adequate
information on good grooming and environmental hygiene".

The Head of Department, Community Development in Oshimili South Local Goverment Council Mrs. Ukpedor Bridget commended the NYSC Community Development Service initiative on environmental sanitation and appreciated the corps members for the clean up exercise at the Area Council. She supported the NYSC with work tools and laborers at the Local Goverment Area Council.

Similarly, Chief Dim Uchenna, Chairman of Midwifery Marketers Association commended the Scheme for the sensitization and cleaning up exercise carried out by corps members in the Midwifery Market. He appreciated the corps members and donated crates of minerals and biscuits to corps members assigned to the market area for the sanitation exercise.

Also at summit junction Motor Park and Ogbeogonogo Market, commuters and traders were seen gathered and assisting the corps members in the clean up  exercise. The message of personal hygiene and clean environment was passed to the public during the environmental sanitation exercise to the admiration of all within the vicinity.

The National Environmental Sanitation Day (NESD) program was observed in all the Local Goverment Area across Delta State.

The incoming NYSC Delta State Coordinator, Mr. Alao Olusegun O. appreciated the corps members for their attendance to this important national program, as he charged them to observe safety precautions in the course of the environmental sanitation exercise.

Highlights were  announcement of the incoming State Coordinator, who was carrying out his first official assignment with the corps members upon assumption of duty in Delta State a day before and the sanitation exercise.
